After a great deal of fighting with the officials, it was announced by Office of United States Attorney from Missouri Eastern District that there has been a settlement finalized between the leading players of Web searching that includes Yahoo, Microsoft and Google. It was done on DOJ claims, which showed that all of them were involved in the promotion of illegal gambling.
The overall sum of the settlement has been more than $30 million. However, there is no involvement of any guilt admission by these organizations in the final deal. Again, they are not representing a contest against the charges, which is a common scenario in such cases. Charges of abetting and aiding online gambling against them have stemmed after they started including ads promoting gambling on their web pages.
The whole scenario of the settlement will get clearer, if you go through the press release that DOJ has issued on the case. It says that:
Microsoft Settlement
Settlement of Microsoft that totals $21 million (including a 4.5 million for the US government and a contribution of $7.5 million to ICMEC (International Center for Missing and Exploited Children) for establishing funds that can assist the mission both international and national).
Again, Microsoft Corporation has agreed for providing an extra online $9 million in advertising campaign for public service. It will educate and inform target audiences comprising of college students and even younger pupils that gambling have not been legalized by U.S. law. The campaign will start from 2008 and continue for a span of 3 years.
The settlement, which is standing on illegal conducts (neither contested nor admitted by Microsoft Corporation), alleges that in between the period of 1997 to the first half of 2007, the organization has received payments through promotion of online gambling from different houses.
Google Settlement
The overall settlement with Google stands at $3 million. It also claims that the Search Engine Powerhouse has received payments through online gambling businesses for a period of 10 years (in-between 1997 and first half of 2007). Similar to Microsoft, they have neither contested nor admitted the charges. This procuring participation is illegal under Federal abetting and aiding statute (18 U.S.C. Section 2).
Yahoo! Settlement
The overall settlement of Yahoo! stands at $7.5 million. It resolves claims that they have made businesses through promotion of online gambling during the period that is similar to the other two parties. They have also neither admitted nor contested the claims. They have already forfeited to the US government, a sum of $3 million.
In addition to that, they have agreed for providing 3 year $4.5 million online advertisement campaign for public services. This campaign, beginning in January 2008, will involve informing and educating users that participants and operators of gambling and bookmaking activities in the US territory are subjected for arrests and prosecutions.
